What is a bedside crib?
A bedside crib, also known as a bassinet, or co-sleeper is a crib for babies that is attached to your adult bed. This allows your child to sleep right next to you in a safe environment. It's a method of co-sleeping that is safe and doesn't increase the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) like bedsharing, and can help you build a bond with your newborn.
They have one side that can be adjusted so that you can reach your baby easily in the nighttime to comfort them and feed them. This is particularly helpful for mothers recovering from an op. Many are portable or foldable so you can use them for travel and as a temporary solution for newborns who aren't quite ready to be able to transition into a crib that is large enough.
Look for a crib with a breathable mattress, and an extra-safe cover that will keep your baby safe from stains. You might also want to purchase baby-safe items such as a blanket or teether.
If you're looking for a longer-term solution, some cribs come with conversion kits that let you convert them into a toddler bed or cot when the time is appropriate. This is great for extending their life span and making the transition smoother. Some come with a removable section at the top that can be transformed into a bassinet. Some can be used with either a standard adult bed or a high-rise one. This is a great option for families who are planning on frequent travel or switching between bedrooms at night. Consider the dimensions of your bedroom to ensure you be able to fit in the crib comfortably. Many cribs come with a riser that can be added to create an incline for babies with reflux.

Anna discovered that the CoZee was a safe and comfy sleep space for her newborn. She liked that it didn't move like other models so she wasn't disturbed in the night trying to soothe her child during feedings. The CoZee is available in charcoal and oak and is a beautiful addition to the bedroom. It's more an elegant piece of furniture than some of the other cribs we've tested, which can look quite utilitarian in comparison. The Maxi-Cosi lora
The Iora is a bassinet that can be placed at the bedside that allows parents to feel more connected to their infant while they sleep. It adjusts upwards and downwards and moves through three slide positions to fit next to the parent's bed, or in the corner of the room, to ensure that your baby is close at hand. The mesh siding lets air circulate through, allowing you to quickly see your baby. You can also put away additional pajamas or other items in the large basket beneath.
As opposed to other bedside cribs The Iora can be folded flat and comes with a travel bag which allows it to be carried anywhere. It was easy to move around from room to room, and our mum testers believed it was the perfect size for a bedside crib. The large storage basket is perfect to store bedding and nappies.
This is an excellent choice for parents who are looking to co-sleep but don't wish to share their beds or whose partner may have mobility issues, like arthritis or back issues. Our mom testers loved the ease with which they could access their baby while in the Iora and that it included an adjustable reflux incline that helped alleviate gas.
Our mothers appreciate that the mattress follows NICE guidelines. These are to place the baby in a Moses basket or crib on its own, without toys, blankets or pillows. The mattress is also firm and comfortable for the baby, and sheets are easily available. It's not as light as some of the cribs that are smaller on our list, so if prefer something lighter and easier for you to move, choose another alternative.
